Para-cycling Track Worlds preview: ARA Australian Cycling Team ready to race for rainbows in Rio

The ARA Australian Cycling Team are back in Brazil this week ready to race for rainbows for the second consecutive year at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic and Paralympic Velodrome.

Thirteen Australians will compete at the 2025 UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships, hunting for medals and the rainbow jersey.

Over the next four days, 29 world championship titles are on offer – 17 for women, 10 for men, and two opportunities in the mixed team events.

While the venue will be the same as the 2024 world championships, there are some major program changes.

This year we will see the introduction of sprint and elimination races, while individual pursuit will be removed for C- classified riders. B (tandem) riders will continue racing the individual pursuit.

Here's everything you need to know ahead of competition this week.

What they said

Paralympic gold medallist and multiple world champion, Emily Petricola said: "It is exciting to be back racing track internationally for the first time since Paris. It is going to be a really different championships this year with the complete change of events - no pursuits and the addition of more bunch racing and sprints as well as the introduction of the kilo.

"It is exciting to be this deep into my career but feel like I’m having to start fresh and learn new things! It is a great opportunity to learn a lot about the new events right at the start of the cycle so we can piece together a comprehensive plan into 2028."
