AusCycling opens selection for Esports World Championships

Oct 21, 2022

The UCI Cycling Esports World Championships are fast becoming a happy hunting ground for Australia. In just two editions, we’ve won three medals, including Jay Vine’s rainbow jersey this year.

Now, you too can put your hand up for selection to the Australian team: AusCycling is accepting expressions of interest for next year’s World Championships on Zwift.

Up to four men and four women will be chosen to represent Australia through this EOI process. These eight positions are in addition to any riders who qualify through the Continental Qualifiers, plus any wildcards awarded by the UCI.

Next year’s World Championships are scheduled for February 18. They will feature a new elimination format, with the winner of the rainbow jersey to be decided across three back-to-back races.

After assisting with this year’s World Championship tilt, former professional cyclist Kate Bates has been appointed as the Australian Cycling Team’s first cycling esports coordinator.

Bates says she’s looking forward to supporting more Australian success in this emerging discipline.

“Cycling esports are a key part of the future of cycling, and Australians have embraced it,” Bates said.

“From the esports community leagues through to NRS and Zwift Academy, we've built an incredible talent pathway in Australia that has led to tremendous success in the past two World Championships with medals by Sarah Gigante, Freddy Ovett and Jay Vine.

“I’m excited to see the squad take shape for next year’s event, which is another huge opportunity to show the world what Aussies can do.”
