Kristina Clonan bows out in keirin quarterfinals

Queensland's Kristina Clonan will reset her focus on the sprint after being knocked out of the women's keirin at the quarterfinal stage at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

After a commanding win in her repechage a day earlier, Clonan wasn't able to put her best race together in last night's quarterfinal.

Drawn into the same heat as Lea Sophie Friedrich (GER) and world champion Ellesse Andrews (NZL), Clonan found herself shuffled to the back of the pack as the pace picked up with two laps to go.

The 26-year-old was unable to get herself back into top-four qualifying spots, instead being stuck out wide and move back up the order. She eventually crossed the line in last position, marking the end of her keirin campaign.

Thankfully, Clonan was able to avoid a huge pile-up after the finish involving Nicky Degrendele (BEL), Steffie van der Peet (NED) and Liying Yuan (CHN) where the Belgian's wheel dramatically disintegrated.

Andrews would later go on to win the gold medal for New Zealand.

Clonan will now turn her attention to the individual sprint competition, which starts with qualifying tonight at 10:00pm (AEST).

In the men's sprint, Western Australia's Matthew Richardson comfortably advanced to tonight's semi-finals, where he will face up against Jeffrey Hoogland (NED) from 10:41pm (AEST).
