Glasgow Daily - August 4
Aug 4, 2023
Australia is off to a flying start at the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships, taking three medals on the first official day of competition in Glasgow, Scotland.
Paige Greco created history, winning the first medal of the new multi-discipline world championships format courtesy of a bronze medal performance in the Women's C3 Individual Pursuit.
Jess Gallagher and Caitlin Ward came agonising close to winning our first gold at these championships, falling by just 0.060 seconds to Great Britain in the Women's B 1000m Time Trial. Darren Hicks added to the Day 1 haul, taking silver in the Men's C3 Individual Pursuit.
The chance for more medals beckons tomorrow, with the men's team pursuit squad qualifying fourth, and the men's team sprint squad qualifying second to start their world championship defence campaign. Amanda Reid will also ride for a bronze medal in Women's C2 Individual Pursuit on Day 2 at Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.
11 of our junior downhillers have progressed through qualifying at Fort William's Nevis Range, with junior women's national champion Sacha Mills posting a time of 5:31.212 to hold the fifth fastest qualifying time.
Jessica Sheridan, Zali Miklas, Alix Luckman have also made the 30-rider final, qualifying 16th, 24th and 29th respectively.
Lewis Allbon finished the fastest of the Aussie junior men with a time 4:49.213, good enough for 22nd overall. Allbon is joined by six other junior men qualified for the final, which will be raced tomorrow.
We also send our best wishes to junior women's downhill team member Georgia Henness, who suffered a crash during her qualifying run and was taken to hospital for further treatment on her injuries.
