Harry Sweeny to replace Jack Haig at Zurich 2024 UCI Road World Championships

Sep 22, 2024

Harry Sweeny has been selected to race the 2024 UCI Road World Championships for the ARA Australian Cycling Team following the withdrawal of Jack Haig due to illness and fatigue.

Haig, who has raced both the Tour de France and Vuelta a España this season among 73 race days, fell ill recently and notified team management that he has not been able to recover from La Vuelta and be at his desired level of performance for Road Worlds.

After confirmation of Haig's withdrawal, AusCycling's National Selection Panel has named Sweeny as his replacement.

The 26-year-old was part of the elite men's road race team last year in Glasgow and was impressive in the final week of La Vuelta earlier this month, finishing ninth in the final stage individual time trial after being a key support rider for EF Education–EasyPost teammate Richard Carapaz.

The Queenslander is currently racing at the Tour de Luxembourg and is sixth in the general classification with one stage remaining.

Zurich 2024 will be Sweeny's third elite men's road race appearance for Australia and his sixth across all age groups after wearing the green and gold at under-23 and junior level.

The elite men's road race will be held on September 29.
