Increased support announced for Olympic and Paralympic athletes
Jul 25, 2023
AusCycling has welcomed the introduction of a new funding arrangement from the Australian Government and Australian Sports Commission (ASC), aimed to help athletes on the road to the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Announced this morning by the Minister for Sport Hon. Anika Wells and the ASC, the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games Preparation Fund is a $20 million one-off investment that will support athletes attending qualification events in the final 12 months before the 2024 Games.
While the funding will accordingly enhance Australia’s medal potential at Paris 2024, it is also recognition of cost-of-living pressures, with sports and athletes facing increased travel and accommodation costs when qualifying overseas.
AusCycling CEO Marne Fechner said the funding is an immense show of support for our athletes from the Australian Government and ASC.
“Nothing unites Australia like our athletes, and this backing by the Australian Government and ASC will give them the best possible opportunity to perform well and do us proud on the international stage.
“Our athletes and high-performance units can now dedicate their attention to preparing for Paris 2024, and I applaud the Australian Government and ASC for their support in helping us qualify for the Games.
“Refreshingly, the announcement also indicates the Australian Government and ASC understand athletes are not immune to cost-of-living pressures, with this funding supporting our athletes while they make extraordinary sacrifices in the final 12 months before representing Australia.
The Fund will be administered by the Australian Sports Commission, and aligns with Australia’s High Performance 2032+ Sport Strategy.
