Tenth place for Max Goold was the highlight of a mixed day for the ARA Australian Cycling Team at the UCI Road World Championships.

The final set of individual time trials were contested today in Kigali, with races for the junior women and the junior men.

The morning began with the 18-kilometre women's event, where Penrith's Hannah Gianatti finished 19th, over two minutes down on the winner, Megan Arens from the Netherlands. Brisbane's Tully Schweitzer was another 30 seconds back.

"[A]bsolutely gutted with my performance today. After all the work and preparation, this one really hurts," Schweitzer wrote on Instagram.

"Came for so much more but ended up well below what I know I am capable of. Struggling to understand why I couldn’t execute today - but sometimes the legs just don’t show up when you need them most."

In the junior men's race, Melbourne rider Max Goold put in a solid performance to complete the 22.6-kilometre course in just over 30 minutes. That was enough to put him provisionally in the bronze-medal position until the later finishers pushed him down to 10th overall.

Lucas Stevenson was one of the last starters of the day, but was forced to swap to his road bike after a puncture early into his race. The bad luck cost him precious time, and Stevenson ultimately finished three minutes down.

The 2025 Road World Championships continue tomorrow (Wednesday), where the ARA Australian Cycling Team will be aiming to defend its world title in the mixed relay team time trial.

The junior men will return to action on Friday for the road race, while the junior women's road race will be on Saturday.
