Logan Martin leads Aussie squad at UCI BMX Freestyle World Cup opener in Montpellier

May 25, 2022

Australian Cycling Team athletes Logan Martin, Josh Matthews and Brandon Loupos have touched down in Montpellier, France, for the first round of the UCI BMX Freestyle World Cup in two years.

Returning after a break due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the UCI World Cup for BMX Freestyle Park will be the marquee competition at the FISE (International Festival of Extreme Sports) Montpellier event, which is expected to attract hundreds of thousands of spectators from May 25 to 29.

Logan Martin headlines the Australian Cycling Team squad and the world champion is keen to replicate the same form that brought him the rainbow jersey in Montpellier last year.

The last time Montpellier hosted a World Cup round was June 2019, where Martin was forced to settle for third place whilst suffering from food poisoning. Martin finished second overall in 2019, and, as things stand, an overall World Cup is one title the Olympic champion is yet to capture.

Fellow Queenslander Josh Matthews placed sixth at the UCI World Championships last year in Montpellier and is excited to make his World Cup debut.

“This is my first World Cup, so I’m super happy to be out here in Montpellier with everyone,” Matthews said during practice.

“It has been such a fun week so far, and I can’t wait to do my best out on the course with everyone.

“I got sixth last time I was here, and I’m pleased about that. I’m going to do my best to better that result, but really I’m just stoked to be back out here competing again.

“The atmosphere is amazing here!”

In total, six Australian riders will be in action, with Kyle Baldock, Alec Danelutti and Liam Quinlivan completing the Aussie contingent.
