ARA Australian Cycling Team marathon squad confirmed for World Championships

Jul 17, 2025

AusCycling has announced three riders will represent the ARA Australian Cycling Team at the 2025 UCI Mountain Bike Marathon World Championships in Valais, Switzerland.

The squad, announced by the AusCycling National Selection Panel, includes two male and one female rider—each set to make their World Championships debut on the global stage.

Matt King is no stranger to elite competition having competed at a high level on the road earlier in his career—this will mark his first appearance at a Mountain Bike Marathon World Championships.

The Northern Territory-based rider has shown impressive form throughout the 2025 domestic season.

After a strong result at the Otway Odyssey, King claimed a breakthrough victory at the Convict 100, one of Australia’s most prestigious marathon MTB events.

He will be joined by Victorian James Kelly on the start line at the 2025 UCI Mountain Bike Marathon World Championships.

In the elite women’s event, Monique de Abreu will wear the green and gold following a standout year on the marathon circuit.

Based in Canberra, de Abreu was crowned Oceania XCM Champion in Dwellingup last September, before going on to win the 24-Hour Solo MTB World Championships, held in the nation’s capital.

Currently ranked No. 84 in the UCI World Rankings, de Abreu holds the second highest international ranking among Australian women in the discipline.

The marathon will take place in the Verbier and Val d’Anniviers region from the 3-6th of September.
