Daniel McConnell and Brendan Johnston to fly the flag for Australia at the 2022 UCI MTB Marathon World Championships
Jul 21, 2022
Two of the country’s most experienced mountain bikers will compete at the 2022 UCI MTB Marathon World Championships held in Haderslev, Denmark, in September.
Daniel McConnell (ACT) and Brendan Johnston (ACT) have been selected to represent Australia at the championships, which will take place from 17-18 September 2022.
Despite having won four national titles, it will be the first time Johnston has competed at the Marathon World Championships.
"I’ve always wanted to do this event, but the timing has been tricky in the past,” said Johnston.
“This year the nature of the course and the way my season has been planned out gives me the perfect opportunity to not only head over but hopefully compete for a result in the green and gold colours.”
For McConnell, he will be making his second appearance at the Marathon World Championships.
The last time he competed at the event was in Italy in 2018, where he finished 23rd.
“This year the whole focus has been around the Commonwealth Games and with the World Champs running just weeks after it feels like a good opportunity,” McConnell said.
“Although I haven't raced much overseas this year, my form is better than it's been for a while so that is really motivating and getting me through the winter months.”
In the elite women’s, all-rounder Holly Lubcke (QLD) was selected to compete, however, has declined.
